“The face of the water, in time, became a wonderful painting–a painting that was a dead language to the uneducated passenger, but which told its mind to me without reserve, delivering its most cherished secrets as clearly as if it uttered them with a voice. And it was not a painting to be visited once and thrown aside, for it had a new story to tell every day.”- Peter Barnitz on Painting (Mark Twain: Life on the Mississippi)

The Down By the River exhibition is a curated selection of art in various media that emphasizes our relationship with the water in which we live with everyday. From the river to the lake, to the swamps and surrounding spillways, we are surrounded and connected. A selection of local artists interpret their personal interactions with the water involving topics such as life, meditation, peace, growth, healing, nourishment, recreation, mythology, satire, even fear and adventure.  Just like the river, our lives are ever changing moving and connected to each other.

We are pleased to be included in this art exhibition with a  modern dance performances, choreographed by Rebecca Allen entitled Carried.

A dance is by nature ephemeral, with each moment unfolding and giving way to the next.

In our commissioned piece entitled Carried, the dancers will engage in an ever-changing adventure of togetherness while making deliberate choices around one’s relationship to time.

Dancers along with the spectators will ask the following questions: If time was a river, am I being carried or am I driving forward? Am I resisting, in the way one might try to swim upstream, or am I allowing time to pass through or around me?

Carried is approximately 10 minutes long and will take place as spectators move around allowing them the opportunity to become part of the overall experience.
